Robberg Nature Reserve Extreme Abseiling in Plettenberg Bay

Abseil Plett – YES, YOU CAN!!

Robberg Nature Reserve has recently added to its list of accolades by featuring on the 35 best hikes in the world list and rightly so! This world heritage site with caves dating back over 120 million years is also a marine protected area with a thriving 6000 plus strong seal colony and there are frequent sightings of dolphins and whales too! This little nature reserve packs a big punch in just a few kms. We’re talking spectacular views, untouched pristine beaches, scenic trails and now there is the added attraction of the Adventure Zone Abseill!

Its no wonder after driving from Cape Town to Wilderness the day before, we with much excitement headed off to Plett to immerse ourselves in this experience. We arrived at the gate just before the crowds so managed to find a parking easily. I would recommend parking before the gate and walking in as getting out could be quite a challenge with cars parked on both sides of the road when the designated parking is full.

We were in awe of the views, even our teen daughter and her friend took a moment to just take it all in. Anyone who has teens knows it take s a fair amount to elicit an excited reaction hanging out with the parentals.

We met Johan at the jump site who was friendly, informative, and so keen for everyone to have the best time - even those not abseiling. The safety briefing was comprehensive, and at your pace. He was so good that our 13 year old daughter was adamant she was going to do it despite being scared of heights!!… Plan was for the husband to abseil while the girls and I took a little hike and Johan had a great suggestion, he set us off on the hike to the bottom of the abseil. This allows everyone to be involved in the experience, visit the cave, and learn about the fascinating history and view the rappelers coming down from the launch site.

The walk down is really for all fitness levels and is less than a km. I would recommend walking shoes and comfortable clothes, but special training gear isn’t necessary.  The views are just phenomenal so be sure to take a camera or your phone to get some pics, We did take a selfie or 5. The 12 story abseil gives you the most incredible and magnificent views. Don’t believe me, check out the video for yourself.

Such a great way to experience Robberg without it taking up the entire day or being too strenuous, giving a family a great experience whilst some people abseil. You could literally grab a coffee from the coffee truck, find a bench and be happy!

We went for a little 3km hike to see the baby seals and loop back and went off for adventure number next within 3 hours of getting there. Will we be back, absolutely! Our 13-year-old daughter is determined that she is going to abseil this site and believe you me when she sets her mind to something it’s going to happen.

Adventure Zone we are fans and cant wait to come back.
