Apart from offering visitors an exciting and novel method of travel, taking the Flying Dutchman funicular saves visitors an uphill walk from the car park to see the old lighthouse and enjoy the panoramic views. The Flying Dutchman Funicular, also known as the Cape Point Funicular, is a funicular railway located at Cape Point. It is believed to be the only commercial funicular of its type in Africa, and takes its name from the local legend of the Flying Dutchman ghost ship. The line runs from a lower station at the Cape Point car park, up an incline through dense fynbos to the upper lighthouse. The funicular leaves from the lower station every three minutes, comfortably accommodates 40 passengers per car, and can transport 450 persons to the upper lighthouse per hour, making it the ideal way to whisk closer to the lighthouse even during peak times.

(15min)    Tucked under the slopes of Signal Hill, the Bo Kaap is a fascinating and vibrant area that was somehow bypassed in the forced removal policies of the Apartheid. Also called the Malay Quarter, this area is characterised by its multi-coloured cottages and steep cobbled streets, as well as its exotic Malay culture. No tours in Cape Town would be complete without a visit to the Bo Kaap! (15min)   For those who enjoy a sense of history, the South African Museum offers a look at life throughout the ages in South Africa. Many exhibits can be found here, and there is also a Planetarium situated within the building. The museum is situated in the Company Gardens, which holds the Seat of Parliament. Pristine lawns, shady paths, ornate fish ponds, statues of past leaders and plenty of curious squirrels are just a part of the Company Gardens’ charm.  (20min)   Other highlights that you can enjoy on a Cape city tour include a stop past the famous Blue Flag beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay. (1h 30min) Penguin Colony & Simon's Town A trip to Boulders Beach you will not forget - one of the only places in the world that you can swim alongside penguins. Boulders Beach has grown rapidly to over 3000 penguins since only two breeding Jackass penguins settled in that arrived from Dyer Island, near Gansbaai. Simon's Town is the seat of the SA Navy, and has a charming coastal town atmosphere and a vibrant history. Here you can find a thriving harbour, The Warrior Toy Museum and The South African Navy Museum. View the frigates and submarines from a distance that are docked at the Naval Base harbour. (45min) Kalk Bay The quirky seaside village of Kalk Bay runs along the Main Road, with the False Bay coastline running on one side, and the mountain on the other. Along the Main Road lies a host of veritable treasure troves, from antique shops to costume shops, cobbled streets, vintage bookstores, bakeries, the famous Brass Bell restaurant and plenty more. The area is also excellent for whale watching during whale season (June to November). Muizenberg Muizenberg is a world-renowned surfing spot, where people from all parts of society join in communion to enjoy the wonders of the ocean. Situated on the beach, you will find an array of the famous colourful beach huts and plenty of restaurants and surf shops. Shark spotters keep a lookout for potential danger roaming in the bay. Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, one of ten botanical gardens in Africa, offer visitors a haven of peace and serenity at the foot of the Devil's Peak mountain. Let yourself be enchanted and your senses roam free in the sights, smells and sounds of this luscious forest. Kirstenbosch offers weekly concerts, picnic spots, rolling lawns and streams, hiking trails and indigenous plants. The Cape Peninsula stretches over 52km’s (32.3mi) and is littered with bustling and breath-taking seaside towns like the famous Camps Bay and Hout Bay. We spend the day exploring the Peninsula making photo stops at every opportunity. Chapmans Peak was built between 1915 and 1922 with the use of convict labour. It offers a 180-degree panoramic view and is a sightseer’s dream. It leads into the small naval town of Simons Town that is home to the Boulders beach penguin colony. After a visit here we make our way to the Cape Point national park for a short walk to the most South Westerly point on the African continent. We make our way back to the city via Scarborough and Misty cliffs that acquired its name because of the constant mist that hangs over the small town for most of the year.
