Robben Island

About Robben Island

Robben Island, Dutch for Seal Island, is a small Island situated inside Table Bay approximately 7km’s from Blouberg Beach. Since the end of the 17th Century, the Island has served as a prison and is famous for housing political prisoners, most noticeable, former President Nelson Mandela. The Island was first discovered shortly after the arrival of the Ducth East India Company. The Island represented a significant risk to passing ships and a base was established. Huge bonfires were lit each night to warn ships of the Island’s presence. In addition to this, the Island provided fresh water and food to passing Ships. Today Robben Island plays an important part in the History of South Africa and offers museum and prison tours. The Island is accessible by Ferry which departs daily from The V&A Waterfront. The Island also attract endurance swimmers who undertake the gruelling 7km swim between Blouberg and the Island.

Visitors can EXPERIENCE the history and culture that the Island offers whilst EXPLORING the museum and prison during an informative guided tour.
